about me
Hi, I'm William and I head up the WEB Team (Web Engagement & Banking) at Vancity, Canada's largest credit union.

My opinions and views are just that, and don't reflect the views of my employer (or, perhaps, anyone else).

I can be found on LinkedIn and Twitter.

It's all about me...

In front of the Mendenhall GlacierTwo cool things happened to me today that I want to tell you about.

The first thing is that I gave my presentation to the Internet Marketing Conference, which is happening today and tomorrow in Vancouver. It was only a 25 minute slot, which is short, but I delivered it in about 15 minutes, so we had time for some good questions. I usually like longer slots to get into more details, but it was fun to give a short, tight presentation instead.

A couple of people blogged it, which is a first for me, I think.

Miss 604 live blogged it, which I appreciate. And one of the sponsors, Techvibes summed it up nicely.

The second thing is that my friend TJ McCue published an interview he did with me. I've known TJ for about a year, and we met... um... hey TJ, how did we first meet? Anyway, I admire TJ for his smarts and entrepreneurial spirit. He's always got something cooking, and it's usually pretty interesting. He blogs on the Dun & Bradstreet content portal called AllBusiness.com. He ran an article called Why Bother with Blogging or Social Media. It's a good piece, and may be part one of two.

Enjoy, and thanks for this indulgence...

NOTE: Here's part two, it's called Why Bother with Blogging or Social Media, part two

Hey William,
how did we first meet? that is indeed a good question. i think, i think i read one of your first posts at Netbanker and commented and you commented back.

We then figured out that we had some mutual acquaintances, plus right around that time i was headed to Van for a client meeting and we were able to grab a cuppa.

Glad you like the post. Thanks for the mention and for taking time to give solid, thoughtful answers. Oh, and thanks for your kind comments.

Okay, gotta comment again...

Think of community engagement...not social media.

This is so perfect. I may go back in and edit my D&B post title...

Community Engagement. Right on.

For the people who claim there's no profit in such a task, they could think about it as "customer engagement". While i know well that Customer Relationship Management purports to have this under wraps... When was the last time you preferred to be "managed" by a brand??

If you are not willing to engage with a community, with a customer, then why would you be in business?

Anyway, i will climb down off my soapbox. Right on. Community Engagement. Thanks William.

Hi TJ. Right, I couldn't remember how we met.

I love the term Community Engagement. This always happens with technology, at first we refer to the tools and not the action we want to accomplish.

The task is engaging community, the new toolset is social media. Social media, while a handy way to refer to it, doesn't so the action justice.
